Gar Samuelson Fatal Opera is basically labeled as a Power/Progressive band - Do you agree? How would you describe Fatal Opera with a few words? I like "Guru Metal." I guess you could say we are Powerful and Progressive. They use to call this style Fusion or Jazz-Rock Fusion. Which are your most fave songs to play? I like the experimentation process, so the new stuff is best for me. Anything I don't know! If I had to choose, I would say "Kill 'Em," "Bong," and "Indiscretion." Which sort of instruments do you play besides your own one? I write on acoustic mostly 6 and (12 strings in open D tuning). I also try to play percussion, lap steel guitar and bass. Your equipment list? I am actually useing the same D.W. Kit from the Mega videos. Custom made for me. 7 ply maple with a transparent "smoke" black finish and Tama hardware. Sizes-2-24" kicks, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 19 inch crashs/20 inch heavy ride, pair of 14 and 13" hi-hats and 24" china and 18" pang. All of the highest quality. Who are your musician influences? Drum influences are Keith Moon, Mitch Mitchel, Bill Bruford, Billy Cobham, Tony Williams, Leny White, Buddy Rich. Who are your band influences? Hendrix, Mahavisnu Orchestra (old), Return To Forever (old), Passport (old), Sex Pistols, Beatles, Miles, Coletrain, Allman Brothers, Jeff Beck, U.K., Soundgarden, Megadeth I guess? A little!? What kind of position does music have in the world in your eyes? What do you see in music? It's the universal language. It's a good medium for expressing ones views, social or political. Do you believe that lyrics generally are an essential part of songs? If so, why? Lyrics are Good for lyrically based songs. Do you think that political or social issues of lyrics have an effect on fans? Yes. Anything you would like to add or get out? No...I quite content. What kind of position does music have in the world in your eyes? What do you see in music? Music is just a way of entertaining yourself and others. Also a good way to waste a lot of time and money. Do you believe that lyrics generally are an essential part of songs? If so, why? No. Do you think that political or social issues of lyrics have an effect on fans? In a small way. How would you describe Fatal Opera with a few words? I agree with the Power/Progressive lable. It is equally open as our music. Which are your most fave songs to play? Fly, Indiscretion, Lotar, and Devil Monkeys. Which sort of instruments do you play besides your own one? I occasionally fiddle with drums and electric piano (Rhodes). Your equipment list? 50's reissue strat, Fender Prosonic Amp (Both head and combo versions), Stew-made log guitar, Ada flanger, '55 Gibson 30 Amp, early 60's harmony combo with Jensen speaker. Who are your musician influences? Charlie Christian, John McLaughlin, Robin Trower, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Johnson, Jeff Beck, Beatles. Who are your band influences? Mahavishnu Orchestra, Hendrix, Trower, Cream, Beatles. What kind of position does music have in the world in your eyes? What do you see in music? The musicianship of the persons within the bands has become too unimportant. Everything is getting superficial (3 chordy) - what chords? It's all electronic! Do you believe that lyrics generally are an essential part of songs? If so, why? I personally can live without any lyrics at all. But if need be, they must fit the emotion of the music and vice-versa. Do you think that political or social issues of lyrics have an effect on fans? No Reply. I agree that it's Powerful and Progressive, but it's also has a very strong jazz and blues feel. I would say power jazz, rock, blues, funk, ragae. Which are your most fave songs to play? Mindfuck, Dredge, Indiscretion, Bong, Kill 'Em, all of our next album's material. Which sort of instruments do you play besides your own one? Cello (played like a bass), vocals, percussion. Your equipment list? Early 70's Ampeg Sut with 8x10 cabinet, Warmoth jazz bass 5-string, Carvin 5-string, homemade fretless. Who are your musician influences? Stanley Clarke, Jack Bruce, Jaco, Tony Levin, Bob Daisley, Steve Harris, Jimi Hendrix, Charles Mingus, Miles Davis, Thelonius Monk. Who are your band influences? Hendrix, Megadeth, Metallica, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Beatles, Jethro Tull, Soundgarden, Bob Marley, John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman, Return To Forever. What kind of position does music have in the world in your eyes? What do you see in music? I think it underscores everything we all are and do, but to me it's in the forefront, which is often overlooked. Do you believe that lyrics generally are an essential part of songs? If so, why? Song lyrics reflect our changing world, someone's opinions', someone's emotions, which mean different things to each person who hears them. Do you think that political or social issues of lyrics have an effect on fans? Yes, I and also think those lyrics inadvertantly change the way people think, hopefully. But they may incite riots or revolutions. Anything you would like to add or get out? Fatal Opera music is a microcozum that represents everything that occurs in the world and is catagoriless. The lyrics bring across real feelings and real thoughts. Which are your most fave songs to play? The Fly, Inside/Outside, End Of Me, Swept Away (next CD), Overshadowed (Oh yeah "Dredge"). Which sort of instruments do you play besides your own one? Guitar for 11 years, piano, bass, drums, wood flute, trombone. King Diamond, Soundgarden, Lilian Axe, Metallica, Duran Duran, Van Halen, Danzig. What kind of position does music have in the world in your eyes? What do you see in music? Music is pain. Music is love. Music is fun. Music makes me mad. Music makes me happy. Music clears my mind. Music consumes me. Music makes me horney. Music can change things. Do you believe that lyrics generally are an essential part of songs? If so, why? Yes, I think that the lyrics tell the story and the music accents the story. Do you think that political or social issues of lyrics have an effect on fans? Yes, music has proven changes, like Farm Aid, or some rap. Music in general reflects society. Songs like Dredge may open someone's eyes to the problem caused by their government leaders. Anything you would like to add or get out?
